NEW APME LIVE! STUDENT FESTIVAL

The Association for Popular Music Education (APME) invites music educators to bring their student ensembles and soloists to its annual conference, this year at The Detroit Institute for Music Education in Detroit, Michigan, from May 27-30. This non-competitive festival will provide an encouraging educational atmosphere for students and music educators to perform for peers and the local community and also take part in sessions to learn from a team of outstanding popular music clinicians and professional musicians. All middle school, high school, and collegiate popular music ensembles are encouraged to participate.

In scheduled daily sessions, highly qualified music clinicians and professional musicians will provide a clinic and recorded critique, offering suggestions for improvement and noting areas of strength for performing students. In addition to the recorded evaluations and clinician’s clinic, each ensemble will receive a certificate of participation and qualifying students will receive individual certificates recognizing outstanding solo performances. There is no required repertoire; bands can play original music and/or cover songs. Performances are open to the public and attending students and teachers  are encouraged to listen to as many of their fellow performers as possible.

Each ensemble or solo performer will have 15 minutes to set up and 45 minutes “onstage.” This includes set-up time, performance time, and a clinic with the adjudicators. There is no limit to the number of compositions each ensemble performs; however, 25 minutes is recommended to allow time for your clinic.

After the adjudication session schedule is complete, the conference will feature an evening of performances on a festival stage by student ensembles and soloists selected by adjudicators, although ensembles and soloists can opt out of performing. The festival stage will feature professional sound, lights, and backline.

Additionally, over the event’s three days, each attending teacher and student will have access to all sessions and presentations during the APME conference.  There will be a specialized track recommended for students as well. The conference features networking events, songwriting sessions with professionals, and opportunities for one-on-one mentoring and discussions with industry professionals, expert educators, and researchers in popular music.

If accepted to attend, participation fees are as follows:

First ensemble fee: $150; Second ensemble fee: $100; Third or more: $75 each.
